what is the best needle for felting cat fur
Hello and thank you for your question. This is actually a hard one to answer without feeling the fibre you are working with since all cat's fur is different.
I would personally be going for the 36 gauge needles, they are an all-round needle for working with various fibres:
40 Gauge needles - suitable for fine detail and finishing - Barbs on 3 sides. A fine needle for detail work and getting a neat surface. Best not to use it when working with coarse fibres or for rough sculpting/bulk work.
36 Guage needles - Suitable for fine, medium and or Coarse fibres - Barbs on three sides. A good needle for making the bulk of a 3D piece and again, attaching pieces well. Not good for any detail work.
32 Gauge needles - course felting - suitable for embellishments and fast felting - Barbs on 3 sides. This is a sturdy needle good for working with course fibres and firmly attaching pieces. Not great for detail or a neat surface.
Star Felting Needles - 38 Gauge - suitable for fine detail and finishing - With barbs on four sides it is a great all round needle, good for finer work and finer wools as well as bulky sculpting work.
Reverse Barb Felting Needles - 36 Gauge - Suitable for embellishments and fast felting - The barbs go the opposite direction which results in fibre being pulled out. This is useful to create a fluffy finish on well-felted pieces.
Spiral Felting needles - 36 Gauge needles with spiral barbs for a faster and smoother finish - The needles are twisted which makes felting faster while reducing the surface holes other needles make.
I hope this is helpful
